commented out

I’ve been noticing the emergence of what I hope isn’t the start of a new trend in the blogging world. People removing commenting from their sites. Alison, Ernie, and Derek have all removed the feature from their weblogs. They all have their reasons, and I’m not about to second guess them, or say that they were wrong to do it, but it’s certainly not a trend I would like to see propagate throughout the community. There are a lot of sites I would love to see add this functionality. I don’t like the idea of people removing it.

  1. I totally agree…I think they wussed out and took the "this is my sandbox" excuse so they wouldn’t have to administer their site (very non-confrontational). Y’know for individuals who rave about how the web brings people together…and who are always advocating the greatness of online communities…it seems a tad hypocritical that they shut down their own comments.

  2. dan, i feel for the lonely people. that’s why i’m now going to sing this song, written especially for you. 1,2,3, fo’…

    sunshine happy birds
    flying in the happy trees
    sugarcane marshmallow sandbox
    just for you and me

comment on my comment on your
    which x are you meme
we’ll hold hands and skip through all
    the happy blogger dreams.

…it’s just a little something i’ve been working on. your very own little moment of zen.

  3. A grumpy Dan Beauchamp? Say it ain’t so.

Actually I think you’re right though, Dan. I don’t like the idea of hemming people, or conversations in. You can’t build community by shutting people out or asking them to conform to your rules. Even if things occasionally get out of hand.

And bran, no singing allowed in my blog. If this sort of thing continues I may have to delete comments. Please stay on-topic. heh ;)
